CHAPTER 32

BACK FROM THE DEAD

Adam grinned ear-to-ear like he’d won the lottery.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” I asked.

“Musta slipped my mind.”

“But how?”

“I don’t know. Lots of stuffs slips my mind.”

I rubbed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose. “No, Adam; I mean, how did you wipe our records?”

“Oh, right! Remember earlier I mentioned Slick Gibbs? I was his rock dealer. I don’t touch the stuffs. One time was ‘nough for me. But Gibbs hit the pipe hard! Normies hit that stuffs two times a day, three times tops. But not Gibbs. Gibbs had it breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a few side dishes between if you know what I’m sayin’. One time, I found him dead in his apartment. Well, he wasn’t dead. But he looked dead! Like really dead—dead as dead can look. And I had to pump his chest. I didn’t know if I was doin’ it right, but I musta, ‘cause he came to. That was scary! You never expect a giant like Slick Gibbs to be flat on his back like that.”

Sophia covered her mouth in shock; Rodman was cool as a cucumber.

“Get to the point, Adam.” I rolled my hands in the air.

“Right! So after bringin’ Gibbs back from the dead, he said he owed me. He tol’ me he could get me anythin’ I wanted, ‘cause, as you know, Gibbs had a pocket of dough bigga than the Grand Canyon.”

“And you asked him to expunge our records?”

“He rattled off a list of stuffs, and when I heard he could wipe slates clean, I said to myself, ‘That might come in handy someday for CJ,’ since you were tryin’ to get on the straight and narrow, so I went with that.”

“And he actually did it?”

Astonished by the question, Adam replied, “I ain’t never doubt Slick Gibbs in the past. Why doubt ‘im now?”

“There’s one way to know if he did it,” Rodman mumbled into his mug.

I met Sophia’s eyes. She dropped her jaw in surprise, her freckled cheeks burning red. “Don’t even ask!”

“Sophia, please, I’m sorry I freaked out.”

She ran her nails through the roots of her hair. “Freaked out is an understatement.”

“I was stressed out and hadn’t slept.”

“No excuse.”

“I was afraid of what you would find. I didn’t mean what I said. I swear!”

She slapped a hand on the table. “You’re only saying that because you need me now.”

I reached across, taking her hand. “Please, Sophia! You’re one of the most important people in my life.”

“Behind me,” Rodman muttered.

“And me,” Adam chimed.

“I’d do anything to fix the mess I made.”

A long pause fell between us. I kept my hand stretched across the little table. She hadn’t pulled away. Instead, she examined the hair tie on my wrist. I felt childish for wearing it, ashamed that she saw it.

Adam tipped his chair toward me. “Maybe offer takin’ her for ice cream.”

“Can it!” I growled.

Sophia took a deep breath and pulled away from my hand. I thought she was letting go of my apology,
